When one's phone has a full charge, one can go to settings/battery and check how long the battery is expected to last based on usage patterns. Yes, people may use their phones differently day to day, but not usually in a big way. One may get more phone calls on one day, watch some videos on another, have more waiting around time where they are web surfing or game playing, but the general usage is in the same range. You can hardly go anywhere without being in a place where you can plug in and charge and power banks are a thing, and chargers are not hard to carry around or borrow. One can, guess what, actually go to the settings/battery and see what their level is and how much more time they are expected to get. There are also widgets one can add to their screen if they *need* to see their level at a glance. One can create a routine to remind them that their battery is below a certain level, and set that level to a point where they still have enough time to use their phone and still have time to find a charger/charging station (I use 30% - still gives me 5 hours of use before power saving turns on).

I get that people are used to just glancing at the status bar to see the level, but it's not the be all and end all, and if people find the new indicator annoying, register your displeasure by emailing the CEO or sending feedback to the development team or hiding the icon from the status bar so they don't have to face the horror.
