Open the app and it will ask you if you want it as your default tap make as default or yes

Or you can go to settings > apps > choose default apps and find sms apps tap it and tap Google messages

Instead of going through the whole process with you I'm just going to say that I agree with the previous comments. I unfortunately have the S22 also

You should get the option when you open up the app but in case you don't hold down on the apps icon and tell the little pop-up appears hit the ⓘ then select default app and choose messages

They're asking because they want to use Google messages over Samsung messages which is smart

That's such a long process when they can just hold down on the icon in the app drawer or home screen and hit the ⓘ
