My phone is suddenly shutting off, only works on charger

My Samsung has been acting a little weird to the point I can't do anything on it. First my phone was dying really quickly and it would drop from 100 to 0 percent. Next thing happening is a black screen. I could take my phone of the charger for a minute and it would rather go black or freeze up. Then it dies. And more recently when it's at 100 and it "dies" i plug it in and it's at 52%. This all started happening last Saturday I belive and it's to the point I can't do anything on it. I tried updating it and deleting ALOT of apps, but I honestly can't do anything with it off the charger. Any advice?
