S-Pen out prevents keyboard popup

New behavior with s23 ultra all previous spen devices did not behave like this. Keyboard no longer appears the first time it is summoned while the spen is removed from the dock. This is breaking TeamViewer. Now we can either comfortably navigate with the spen OR have the ability to use the keyboard.

Additionally the keyboard is not displaying the first time a native text field is selected with the spen. All fields now require a second click to summon the keyboard.

Very much undesired behavior. We still need the keyboard. The spen does not replace it.

Agreed. I hate this new "feature" and consider it an unwanted glitch. How can I make it go back to the old way, which is much better and less steps?

Turn off "s-pen to text" in settings.

It's not on, it's off and grayed out, shows works with Samsung keyboard only. I use Gboard.

Update: thank you this was the issue, as JeffHiggins said having any but Samsung's keyboard active greys it out and makes it appear off.

I had this as well and just resolved it. It is the "S Pen to text" option, even if you are using GBoard like I am. Switch back to Samsung Keyboard, disable the option, and then switch back, the problem should be gone.
