factory reset is the only option provided by samsung and is punitive to device owner who forgot the pattern. If finger print and pin has also been used a security then they can be used to unlock the phone and not pattern only.

secondly if my account should be able to unlock my device after verification by pruchase receipts , ID of the person and match fingerprint at a store. It is heart breaking to loose picture full of memories to factory reset. How can samsung dont think in simple terms.

@rajiv This is the process. It is in place to prevent information from a stolen phone from being accessed. Providing a back door through security is an invitation for abuse by many 3rd parties.

Sorry you have experienced this.

If you have completely forgotten your device passcode, then no one can unlock your device, not even Samsung, not even Google. The device-level protection does not include backdoors, not for the purpose of being punitive, but as a security measure.

You are correct that a factory reset is generally your only option in this case. However, a factory reset does not have to be a devastating event.

While you cannot do so retroactively to recover lost data at this point, in the future you can set your device to automatically back up and prevent data loss in these kinds of situations. Consider setting up Extend Unlock as well to automatically unlock the device in trusted locations or when connected to trusted devices. It may also be wise to store hard copies of passwords/passcodes in a secure physical location, not only for this situation, but for loved ones in more tragic circumstances as well.

Not punitive, secure. You should not forget your pin/pattern/password. Simple as that. Samsung provides automatic nightly backups, so if one does have to reset their phones because they forgot their credentials and didn't think to write them down anywhere (I always write them down before I even set them.), they can still recover their apps, settings, layout, messages and photos. It is incumbent on the user to regularly backup any personal data, such as downloads or files created in non-Samsung apps. The fact that Samsung (and Google) perform this nightly backup is a convenience to users.

Oh, by the way your pictures are backed up to Google photos, so you should not be heartbroken. Go to photos.google.com in a web browser from any phone or computer, log into your Google account and make sure your photos are still there. If they are not, then this is entirely on you, because if something is important to you, you make sure you back it up, even if you have to do it manually, as no one knows when disaster will strike.

Did you reset it or merely reboot it?

When you factory reset your phone, did you log into the same Samsung and Google accounts you originally used? That is another security measure to prevent someone who stole or found your phone from being able to use it. If you did not log into the same accounts because you forgot those passwords as well, then congratulations, you are the proud owner of a brick.

If you factory reset it properly and logged into the same accounts, you should have no security on the device upon restart, and you can then proceed to restore your backup and set a new pin/pattern/password. Incidentally you should always have more than one method of entry, so that if one does not work, the other one(s) will.
