Infrastructure and resources.

SMS/MMS are 20+ year old messaging protocols. On modern devices, universal RCS support is required to achieve optimal interoperability.

Samsung messages relies primarily on legacy (carrier) implementations of RCS and is largely incompatible with the modern universal RCS profile/Jibe.

In addition to universal RCS as a motivator, it is highly likely that Samsung views their messaging app as redundant and a poor allocation of resources.

They are shutting in down most likely because they don't want to continue developing the app when they are so many other options to choose from.

Will all my existing text messages be preserved if I change to Google messaging? I have texts from deceased family members that I don't want to lose?

Yes, but if you want insurance, download SMS backup and restore and back them up. Also, when you get to Google messages, archive those chats so you don't accidentally delete them. You will preserve them, but they will be out of your way.

I can't say the reason here.
Samsung Messages is a great app with RCS and a lot of features, and it's continuing to work in other countries, but not in the States.
There are more third-party apps, not only Google Messages.
Personally, in July, I will use Textra for texts, and for large files, I will use Tele-gram, WhatsApp, Viber, and Signal.

How will you lose business because there are no categories? If you get a new message from a client, it will appear on top, not to mention you will be notified of its existence. If you need to continue a chat, you can just search for that particular client, or initiate the text from within the contacts app. Then conversation will automatically continue if there is one in progress.

I am sure that Google is working to add some of the features that its now lacking. That's what the blogosphere is saying, anyway.
