S24 Display Quality & AOD Missing Options

Hi All

I've just got my S24+ today to upgrade my trusty but ageing S10+ having not strayed from Samsung for almost 10 years. Naturally I was hoping it would be an upgrade in all departments but although on the whole it is, there's several annoying and unexpected downgrades that are making me seriously question whether it's actually worth spending quite a bit of money to change.

Firstly, the screen although pin sharp is really washed out. Even in vivid mode the colours are dull and the blacks are significantly more grey than the S10 screen, and even look washed out when put alongside my wife's budget spec A52! I've played around with brightness and colour tone etc but I can't dial it out, and my cousin who's got an S24 Ultra said exactly the same when comparing it against the S22 it's replacing.

Then there's some bizarre features missing from OneUI 6.1, the ones I've noticed so far are specifically in the Always On Display settings. I use AOD to display as a bedside clock, with my S10 and also in OneUI 6.0 / Android 14 on the A52 you can rotate the AOD to landscape orientation and control the brightness, you could even do the latter from the AOD lock screen by tapping twice on the clock to access the brightness slider. In OneUI 6.1 unless I'm missing something it seems all that functionality is missing, the brightness of the AOD is linked to the main screen brightness setting which is far too bright for overnight use, and you can't set it to landscape mode which I'd prefer when on it's horizontal night stand next to the bed. Why this functionality would be omitted I have no idea, but it's really annoying! Please someone enlighten me to some hidden menu somewhere that fixes all these issues?! 🙂

I've literally done the same. Upgraded from my s10+ to s24 ultra and the colours are really dull 😑 I've been playing around with it for ages but can't work out how to make it better. The s10+ colours are so much more sharper and more vivid.

Looks like with the AOD it's a small double tap to show time. My screen stays dim when I double tap but could be because I'm on dark mode?

Yep S24+ coming from S10+, so no fancy anti glare glass I don't think.

You can set it to only appear with a tap but I prefer it on all the time so i can just glance at night, but either way it's brightness seems to be proportional to whatever the main screen brightness is set to.

Same exact thing upgraded from s10 to the s24+. The display looks so depressing, no saturation at all. Blacks are Grey and all colors look washed out. I really hope this is a bug. If this is intentional I'm sending my phone back and never touch a Samsung phone again.

Hopefully, the colors are a software fix as well. Otherwise, this is the biggest drawback of the device.

I have the same problem and also battery issues on the s24 ultra. Not happy.

Yeah, I can see Samsung's copying from Apple because their color displays are also dull and now Samsung is following the same routine, like why is Samsung being so hesitant to them?

I also feel so angry & annoyed that they took out the picture option from AOD like why...?

My colors are washed out compared to my very nice s21 ultra on my s24 ultra. And accubattery says it is charging at 4.45 volts and it won't charge as fast as my s21 ultra with my 25w charger it is slow.

There is a 3rd party app called Day Night Clock in the Play Store.

Have you gone into settings, display, screen resolution, by default it is on FHD+, change it to QHD+

It takes 10-14 days for your phone to learn your habits, it will improve.

Go to settings, display, screen resolution, switch to QHD+.
Pull down quick panel, brightness slider, 3 dots turn on extra brightness.

The clock thing download 3rd party Day Night Clock in play store.

I agree with u 💯. One UI 6.1 AOD is a joke. Can't do custom anymore. I switched s9 to s22+. Missing notifications led was the biggest disappointment for me. Samsung shouldn't cut back most loving feature in their flagship phones. I hope they will listen the feedback.

Had the same issue, went from s23 ultra to s24 ultra and the colour difference is ridiculous. Dim and washed out on the s24U.

Waiting to receive our business phone s24 plus on Friday before deciding if these are all going back. Not paying for these downgrades.

Got my S24 Ultra yesterday and noticed the dull colours immideatly when comparing it to my old S21 Ultra. There are some hidden settings im trying out today so ill let you know if that helped.

I cannot comprehend how bad the colours on my new S24 ultra are. I was just comparing to my Note 10+ yesterday and it's what you call day and night. Couldn't get it to set anywhere near the colours of my Note 10+. And don't get me even started on design or weight of the device.

I am seriously considering returning it, and threat myself to brand new Note 10+. I absolutely love the feel of it in my hands and my pocket ( size and shape wise).
