Gemini News Issue: Cannot "Play the news" like Google Assistant

Hi All,

On my old phone, each morning I would ask Google Assistant to "Play the news" as part of my daily routine, and it provided a helpful collection of short audio news updates from various trusted sources.

However, since upgrading to Gemini, I'm not receiving the same experience. Instead, Gemini offers only a brief, AI-generated summary of local news, which isn't what I'm looking for. I prefer comprehensive world news directly from established news providers, not a short AI-generated snippet.

When I attempt to launch Google Assistant for news, it prompts me to switch my default digital assistant away from Gemini, forcing me to choose one assistant over the other.

Is there any way to receive my preferred "Google Assistant news" update without having to completely disable Gemini? Previously, I had Gemini disabled for several months to access this feature, but it's frustrating to lose full functionality of Gemini—the main reason I paid for this premium phone—just to regain my daily news updates.

I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to resolve this without sacrificing the value I expected from this expensive device.

Currently, there's no way to get the full "Play the news" experience from Google Assistant without disabling Gemini. Since both assistants can't run simultaneously, your best alternatives are using news apps or subscribing to news podcasts. Hopefully, Google will restore this feature in future updates.

You know Gemini is also on non-premium phones, so I don't see why you felt the need to go for the big bucks just for Gemini.

"They finally added support for routines to Gemini. I just created a new routine with the word "play the news" and now it works. Gemini invokes assistant and atomically plays my selected news podcasts as expected"
