Problem registering

Just joined and have a gripe. As working through the joining instructions you get to the options select boxes. Most say they are optional but as soon as you select the "I have read the ......" it automatically selects all the tick boxes and you can't proceed with registration unless you allow them. Do the programmers not understand what optional means?
