Once you have a few multitasking apps open, then the extra ram is needed, especially with today's badly optimized apps. You might think 3gigs is enough, yeah that's if you're using bunch of apps already, but when the phone is idle (as much as it can be with background **bleep**) it shouldnt be hogging the memory.
