@Stacyf If you swipe down on the left side of the screen you will see the notifications.

If you swipe down on the right side of the screen you will see the quick panel.

You can put them as together if you want. Pull down to access your Quick Panel from the top right. Tap on the pencil to edit, on the left-hand side there will be panel settings. Together or Separate. I prefer separate.

As LongHiker said, swiping from the left side of the screen will bring down notifications. About 30% of the right side by default will be for quick settings.

You can also change this by going to your Quick Settings and tapping the edit pencil on the top right. Next, select Panel Settings and then switch it to "Together."

Also, if you are in either notifications or quick settings... swipe right or left while in those menus to go to the other

This was helpful thank you! I don't know why I assumed the pencil icon was for the stylus and not to edit the quick panel. I'm going to try it on the left side. I like the idea but the way I hold my phone with small hands on the right I almost never get notifications like I want.
