I formed an opinion on the trashcan in regard to myself. I'm not nuts about it. If I do want to permanently delete a chat to get rid of the associated sound, the sound stay associated until the trash is emptied, meaning I have to go in an manually empty the trash. This could be a good thing for others, so if they recover their deleted item(s), their associated sounds remain with the chat, but for me it's a minor annoyance. The only reason I would delete an entire chat is to move it out of my "conversations" list in the notification sounds and if it was totally unimportant and/or I backed it up with SMS backup.

"ARCHIVING CHATS"

When I first started using Google Messages instead of Samsung Messages for RCS back in 2019, I thought I'd miss categories until I found Archive.

I don't need to see all my chats every time I open Google Messages, just the ones I text daily. When a new message comes from an archived chat, it pops back into your inbox. This helps manage clutter since there aren't categories.

This one feature, which has nothing to do with RCS, is what makes Google Messages better than Samsung Messages!

True. I received trash option last week, makes it much better knowing I can recover a message in 30 days if I don't archive it.

I like the archive for the reasons you stated, but also because since custom sounds stay with the chat, not the contact, archiving the chat keeps the sound associated with the chat, whereas deleting it, the sound goes with it as soon as the trash is emptied (manually or by time). Then you have to configure it all over again if the contact messages you again.

Agreed, this was added specifically for those that think it is absolutely necessary for them to make the switch. Timing is everything, no accident the trash can appeared for many people this week on the heels of Samsung's announcement!
