Samsung Galaxy XR Headset: A Personal Review

After spending time with the Samsung Galaxy XR headset, I’ve developed a well-rounded perspective on its performance. While it offers some impressive features, several aspects fell short of expectations, especially when compared to competitors like the Apple Vision Pro or the Meta Quest.

Comfort and Fit The Galaxy XR was noticeably less comfortable than the Vision Pro. Despite the inclusion of a forehead pad, I experienced persistent pressure at the tip of my head. The strap design added discomfort, particularly around the bridge of my nose—an issue I did not encounter with the Vision Pro or the Meta Quest. The headset also felt heavier than anticipated, contributing to physical strain during extended use. Additionally, the device frequently prompted me to adjust it down and to the left, even when it was already properly positioned.

Hand Tracking and Controls Hand tracking was inconsistent and often unreliable. Pinch-to-zoom gestures were not always recognized, and using both hands simultaneously seemed to confuse the system. The Vision Pro and the Meta Quest, which handled dual-hand input with ease. The touch screen alignment feature, intended to re-center the display, was also hit-or-miss and didn’t always respond as expected.

Eye Tracking Eye tracking performance was underwhelming. The system struggled to accurately follow my gaze, which impacted the overall user experience. It was worse when trying to type and looking at the edge of the keyboard. Even when I try to select a letter it will sometimes choose the one next to it. Which I never had with the Vision Pro or the Meta Quest.

Setup and Software Setting up the Galaxy XR using a Gmail account proved to be more cumbersome than it should have been. In comparison, the Vision Pro offered a much smoother and more intuitive setup process. To get it to connect I had to disable the advance security and just use the 2 step verification.

Visuals and Display The video quality itself was crisp and enjoyable under normal conditions. However, during scenes with fast motion, the experience became uncomfortable and induced a sense of motion strain on the eyes. This limited the headset’s usability for extended viewing sessions.

Maps and Photos The rendering of maps and photos was visually impressive. I appreciated the clarity and detail in both features. That said, the map interface occasionally felt glitchy, echoing some of the same issues seen with video playback.

Battery Performance Battery life was disappointing. The device drained faster than expected, even while plugged in. Charging was slow, and the battery continued to lose power even when I had it charging during use an issue I didn't noticed with the Vision Pro.

Build Quality Perhaps most notably, the Galaxy XR lacked the premium feel of the Vision Pro. The materials and construction felt cheaper, which detracted from the overall experience and raised concerns about long-term durability.

Conclusion While the Samsung Galaxy XR has potential, particularly in its visual rendering capabilities, it falls short in several key areas including comfort, tracking accuracy, and battery performance. For users seeking a high-end, seamless mixed reality experience, these shortcomings may be difficult to overlook.

Re: Samsung Galaxy XR Headset: A Personal Review

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback. We truly appreciate your candid review and the opportunity to help ensure you’re getting the best possible experience with your Galaxy XR. Below is a breakdown addressing the points you mentioned, along with troubleshooting suggestions and additional resources.

Comfort and fit: The Galaxy XR is designed with an adjustable strap and forehead pad that evenly distribute weight for balance and stability. However, comfort can vary slightly between individuals.

Tips for improving comfort:

Rear Fit Dial & Cushion: Ensure the rear fit dial is tightened enough for the back cushion to rest firmly against your head. This helps shift weight away from the forehead and nose bridge.

Side Band Adjustment: Loosening or tightening the side bands can make a noticeable difference in fit and pressure distribution.

Forehead Cushion fit: Make sure the forehead cushion sits flat across the forehead (Not the nose bridge). You can experiment with the included cushion sizes(thin/thick) to find what best matches your head shape.

For a personalized fitting and demonstration, we highly recommend visiting a Samsung Experience Store. Our product experts can show you how to adjust the headset and optimize comfort for extended use properly.

Find your nearest Samsung Experience Store here: https://www.samsung.com/us/store

Hand Track & Controls: Hand tracking recognizes your finger movements so you can point to and select items with gestures. Extend your hand towards the screen to display the pointer. Then move your hand to guide the pointer to the desired location. Check out this link for more details and assistance with Hand tracking controls: https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS10007511/

Eye Tracking: Eye tracking calibrations are unique to each user’s vision. Aligning the display with your vision or calibrating eye tracking is needed when the screen is blurry or items are not selected properly.

Try these steps for improved accuracy:

Recalibrate under consistent, moderate lighting using Settings > Input > Eye calibration > Align displays or Calibrate eye tracking (Press Top button three times to start an eye tracking calibration)

Avoid wearing eyewear or glasses of any kind when using the Galaxy XR

If the display or point feels “off”, re-run calibration until alignment feels natural.

Setup & Software: Set up should be very straightforward. Check out our Galaxy XR headset setup guide for all your needs: https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS10007502/

Visuals & Display: Display experience can vary slightly depending on content source, resolution, and user sensitivity to motion. There may be additional settings our experts can help you change that will help with this at our Samsung Experience shop. Sign up for a demo today, and our experts can walk you through the settings that best fit your needs.

Maps & Photos: Rendering issues are often linked to connection or app caching. Some recommendations we have are:

Confirm your internet signal is strong and stable.

Try closing and restarting the application or device.

If symptoms persist, you can report feedback on these apps directly through the Google Play Store for continued improvements.

Battery Performance: Battery life for the Galaxy XR typically provides up to 2 hours of general use or 2.5 hours of video playback, depending on brightness, apps, and network activity. Please note that this device can be used while charging with the official Samsung cable.

Performance and runtime may vary slightly based on environmental factors and background processes.

For any unexpected drain, our in-store technicians can test battery health and verify software is up to date.

Build Quality: We appreciate your perspective on design and materials. Samsung remains committed to premium craftsmanship- Our devices have received over 45+ honors for having the best quality devices on the market, including 2 Gold awards at International Design Excellence just this year in 2025!

Conclusion: The Galaxy XR is the future of AI innovation, representing Samsung’s vision for the future of spatial computing and AI-powered immersion. While every user experience may differ slightly, most comfort or calibration concerns can be resolved through adjustments or live demos.

Thank you again for your feedback- it genuinely helps us continue improving and ensuring you have the best possible Galaxy XR experience.
