Hi @demeo. Welcome to the Samsung Community!
We know how frustrating it can be when notifications don’t clear the way they should.
Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

1. Check Notification Settings for Each App
Sometimes certain apps use “persistent” notifications that won’t clear on their own.

Go to Settings → Notifications → App notifications
Select the app
Make sure none of the notification categories are marked as “Persistent”
You can also toggle categories off and back on to refresh them

2. Confirm App Icon Badge Settings
Badge syncing can get stuck sometimes.

Settings → Notifications → Advanced settings → App icon badges
Make sure App icon badges is ON
Set it to Show with number for best results

3. Clear the App Cache
If the problem is isolated to specific apps:

Settings → Apps → [App] → Storage → Clear cache

4. Try Turning Off “Notification History” Temporarily
Some users report this causes old notifications to linger.

Settings → Notifications → Notification history
Toggle OFF → Restart → (Optional) Toggle back ON

5. Make Sure Your Software Is Up-to-Date
Samsung regularly releases small fixes.

Settings → Software update

Please let us know if this helps!

Is there a way to make notifications go away once you've opened said app?

On my flip5, if you have a notification for like a reddit comment or an email or text, once you opened that, it doesn't get rid of the notification. Even after I open the app, it still shows the notification on the drop bar and also the number on the app icon. It only goes away when select "clear all" in the drop menu.

I've browsed through the settings but haven't found a way to clear it by selecting the icon only. Am I just looking in the wrong place, or it's something I just have to deal with?

Normal behavior for notifications is that they go away if you open the app manually or tap the notification bubble to open the app. Are your notifications hanging around after you do that? Is it happening for all apps or a particular app?

This is not normal behavior at all. The notification on your shade should go away if you have either tap on the notification and entered the app from the shade, or if you use notification dots on apps.

Try a wipe cache partition to see if this fixes things.

Power off you phone.
While the phone is powered off press the power button and volume up button simultaneously until the phone vibrates and you see the Samsung logo, let go of buttons, you will now be in the recovery menu. Using Volume buttons for scrolling and the power button for Yes, scroll down to Wipe Cache Partition, press power, scroll to Yes, press power, reboot press power.
