On someones recommendation I got a verified lightening or is it thunder cable. I retested using samsung magician app on my surface pro 11 and my work dell laptop (less than a year old) using usb c and the ugreen M.2 dock. The speeds I see are what a sata drive would give. I get about 968 MB/s sequential reads. Either this is a fake samsung drive or I don't know what. I get the same results testing in my ugreen NAS which is built for these types of drives. I'm going to return it. Not worth the money I can't even get 1,000 MB/s. The drive is specs are 7,000+ MB/s.

The 990 EVO Plus is a PCIE Gen 5 device and can do 7000 MB in a proper Gen 5 system.

Any point in the data stream that can't match Gen 5 will reduce the throughput accordingly.

If you test with a Gen 3 system you will get Gen 3 results. Testing will only reflect the bandwidth the system is designed for not what the SSD is designed for.

Putting 200 mph rated tires on a 60 mph car will not make it go any faster.

I had assumed that my UGREEN NAS which is relatively new model would support the latest PCle specs. Well never assume. I just checked and it only supports PCle 3.0 which explains the speeds on my NAS. The surface pro support internally PCle 4.0x4. For an external M.2 I should see speeds of between 2,500MB/s and 3,800 MB/s (read/write). So not sure why the speeds with my surface pro are so slow but doesn't really matter as I planned to use the drive in the NAS.

I run an Asustor NAS with 10 8TB Samsung SCSI SSDs. They saturate the internal data buss and are then bandwidth restricted by the 10 giga bit ethernet port.

My daily driver gamer is an Asus Xeon PCIE 5 workstation with a combination of 1 2TB and 1 4TB Gen 5 and 6 4TB Gen 4 Samsung SSDs inside. It's so bloody fast I don't bother benchmarking it.
