As I am sure that most of you saw upon waking up yesterday that Samsung is getting rid of their messaging app at the end of the month. A lot of people have said that this announcement has been coming for years, but I am a person that doesn't see these posts. Also I may not have even noticed if i did see it because I know that there is no good reason for this forced obsoletion and they can't possibly do it to Millions of people, but here we are.

For whatever reason Samsung is deciding to get rid of their messaging app. From the "complaints" that I've seen it's because our SAMSUNG phones come with Samsung and Google apps pre-installed and "no-one needs 2 apps that do the same thing". In my opinion the apps don't all do the same thing. Beyond everything else though, is that we should have the choice on which service we decide to use and not forced into an operating app that has been notorious for not working even when they didn't have EVERY Samsung user on it.

2 years ago I was working a job that had to use a Google number and Google Voice in order to speak to clients. For a month Google's calling and messaging app went down. All Google numbers were deleted. When trying to create a new one, old numbers would no longer show up but also none for that local area. All messages and correspondences were deleted and unable to be retrieved. The only way to get into contact with anyone was using your real cell phone or a work land line. This caused a backlog on pur ability to do certain things at work and put us in an awkward/potentially dangerous situation. How can we ensure that this doesn't happen again on a larger scale?

Not to mention that my sole reason for using Samsung messaging is for the fact that Google Messges has been notorious for not allowing all messages through and that they also force delete messages that they deem spam. I do not want a messaging app that has that has the ability to mess up important conversations and relationships because of a text went unsent or was deleted.

All I am saying is that this app is not obsolete. Plenty of people I know still use it and prefer it over the Google app. I also know for a fact that the "double-app" debate has not been detrimental to anyone's wellbeing and they will be fine if they have to ignore the apps that are built into the phone. This change doesn't effect the original complainants who can go on ignoring the "extra apps" but it hurts those of us that depend on a reliable messaging app, like Samsung. I have had a Samung for nearly 16 years at this point, I actually owned an original Galaxy, it's insane that I will have to use a different app other than the one that I know and it still works just fine!

The many reasons we don't want Google Messages!

Discontinuing Samsung messenger is the wrong move. Themes and fonts that people paid for are not accessible through Google messages. But on top of that despite android being google owned a lot of people do not want google ingrained in everything we do. I deleted my personal google account a few years ago and use a dupe which you shouldn't need to do to use certain features, the only google apps I use are the play store and maps. I much prefer Samsung messages and if I wanted google everything I would've bought a pixel. I know there are other app choices but why is a third party needed for a basic cellphone function

I understand how disappointing this change can be. However, it isn't totally unexpected.

Samsung announced in 2024 that they would be transitioning to Google Messages as the default messaging app. Samsung has been incredibly gracious in giving users 2 years to make the transition themselves.

Unfortunately, you have likely chosen the wrong device if you do not want to use Google apps and services. Because Samsung devices run Android, which is a Google product, they require Google apps and services in order to function.

This post encapsulates and answers many of your complaints. I hope it is helpful in providing info on the relationship between Google and Samsung here: https://us.community.samsung.com/t5/Samsung-Apps-and-Services/Why-is-there-so-much-Google-in-my-Samsung/td-p/3464924?src=ShareByUserCM

Android was developed by Android, Inc. in 2003, which was then acquired by Google in 2005. While initially created by Andy Rubin, Rich Miner, Nick Sears, and Chris White, Google acquired the company and subsequently led the development of the operating system, unveiling it in 2007 alongside the Open Handset Alliance.

Why would Samsung discontinue Samsung Messages, thereby compelling me to consider alternative platforms such as Apple? I greatly value the customization options, particularly the ability to theme the application. Consequently, I will now need to revert to using "Go Messages" to maintain this functionality. I am genuinely disappointed with Samsung's decision in this regard, especially given my long-standing loyalty to the brand.

The RCS capabilities of Samsung Messaging relies on the carrier supporting RCS, not the app. Kind of like the iPhone. If the carrier decides to stop supporting Jibe RCS on their end, then even if the app supports it, it will stop.

Google Messages has the API to use their own Jibe servers so it doesn't need to rely on the carrier.

This is probably the carriers passing the burden of Android RCS to Google and only supporting the ones for the iPhone instead of supporting 2 implementations.
