Google Messages causing battery drain

Battery issues are horrendou with same other issues mentioned. I have taken my samsung to an ATT store, one was no help, all they wanted to do was sell me a new phone but going to another store today. When I use Google messages, my battery last about 2 to 3 hours. After talking to Samsung 2 times yesterday, they used the Samsung Tutor and were able to look through my phone and see if changes needed to be made, removed and re installed google messages 2 times, cleared all caches, etc. Then said to go back to samsung messages without charging my phone overnight. So 8 hours of Samsung messaging and battery drained about 3%. Changed this morning back to Google messages, battery drained from 97% to 50% in 1 1/2 hours. There are SO MANY COMPLAINTS online about this battery issue, I can't believe Samsung has not done anything about it. I have always been a Samsung user, phones, TVs, ref., etc for over 30 years, but if this continues I will need to to go an Iphone which I would absolutely hate to do for myself and all my company phones for my sales people. I have no Apple products but they are tying my hands if this is not corrected soon. And by switching back and forth, all the messages do not transfer, even after 48 hours when I first started the process 3 days ago, especially the group conversations, they do not transfer at all and became single use messages with the group conversations missing.

Samsung, fix this or go back to your own Samsung messaging app. Google does not work with your phone.

Change the title to something like Help with Battery Drain. Or the post might get deleted or moved to another one talking just about samsung messages vs google messages.

I wish I knew how to fix the battery drain issue. You're not the only that has noticed this issue its been posted on Google Messages Reviews the past few days.

Its one of the many, many reasons im not migrating.

Does anyone know if it's a bug? A permission issue? Or have any idea how to fix this?

Not even Samsung knows. I am on now with my third Samsung tech. so we will see.So far both of the other ones did the exact same thing with no help . This one is again, just telling me to do the same thing that the Smart Tutor Samsung reps remotely did to my phone. She is telling me to go to a service store, then says they have not had any complaints! I told her to just look online, there are many just in the last 3 days on lots of different sites. There is nothing wrong with my phone, no repair needed, she just didnt understand . As usual

Google messages uses no more battery than any other messaging app. Today's battery usage for me is 0.9% (I had few texts - 5 mins screen time). Yesterday was a little more - 1.2% with 14 minutes total screen time (more messages). Look at your battery statistics and see if it's actually Messages that's using your battery, or something else.

It was 15%, and they took a picture and attached it to my form to get a discount on 2 new phones since it happened to both S22 ultras.

New phones have no issues, at least not yet. They said could be due to the new phone has double processors instead of single, but who knows. They said this is only happening to galaxy 11's through 23's. We bought 2 26 Ultras.

Thanks for asking though.

Any messaging app has to run in the background to collect your messages and then deliver then to your device. This shouldn't be a heavy drain on your battery however, so I would look to other causes.

Mine is about 2 hrs at 0900 today. But the CPU, which is power hungry, is just 1 minute.

What's the data packets for that screenshot?

If you've just moving to using GM, then it has a lot of data to transfer to GM and will stabilize after that heavy job is done.

Hello @LucyCurls. Welcome to the Samsung Community!
Thanks for sharing the screenshot. I know how frustrating it is to see Google Messages draining your battery, especially after you’ve already tried reinstalling and limiting background activity.
From the image, Messages shows very high background usage, which isn’t normal. The most common causes are easy to test:
Turn off Chat features (RCS)
Messages > Profile photo > Chat features > Disable, then force stop the app.
(This is the most frequent cause of background drain.)

Clear Carrier Services cache
Settings > Apps > Carrier Services > Storage > Clear cache, then restart.

Clear Messages cache (safe)
Settings > Apps > Messages > Storage > Clear cache only, then restart.

Double‑check battery settings
Make sure Messages is set to Restricted and not excluded from sleep/background limits.

Quick test: If turning off Chat features dramatically reduces background usage, you’ve identified the issue.
If it continues, let us know your phone model, carrier, and whether you use a VPN or dual SIM so we can help further.

That is the wrong metric to look at, go to settings, battery, this will tell you how much battery Messages is using. Just because something is running in the background it doesn't necessarily mean it is using a lot of battery resources.
