I am trading in my Galaxy Tab 8+ for a Tab 9+. Do I need to include the S pen when I return??

I would because I'm not sure it will work with the S9+. Just my opinion. Better safe than sorry!!

Spen is considered an accessory, you don't have to return it. Only in the Samsung phone you have to send back the spen, then it is considered hardware for the phone

Not true. The instructions on returning don't mention anything about s-pen and I've trade-in many styli Samsung phones. No issues. So you don't need to return the s pen.
