I was using an old Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime until last week when the screen finally broke. I moved everything off the phone except for my text messages, call history, and contacts--all of which I need on my new phone. The phone turns on and the Samsung logo comes on, but after that it shows the broken droid. I am pretty sure I interrupted a system update, so I don't even know if my data is still on the phone, or if it's recoverable. I had just downloaded Samsung Smart Switch, but I didn't get to do anything with it.

1) Is there any way to get my data off the phone if the system no longer boots up?

2) Is there any way to transfer data directly from the phone either to another phone or a computer?

3) If not, if I get a new Samsung phone, will my old text messages and contacts automatically appear if I use the Samsung text messaging app?

4) And, if I get another Android phone that is not Samsung, can I download the Samsung messaging app onto that phone, and will it autofill my texts and contacts?

Thanks.

4: if you get a phone thats not Samsung you will not get the Samsung messages app. Thats only for Samsung you will get whatever messaging app is built in which is most likely Google Messages

Your phone would have been backing up nightly to the Samsung Cloud and it syncs automatically with Google backup. If you got another Samsung phone, you can download your Samsung backup - Some of your personal data (documents, downloads, etc) may not come back, as personal data is not usually saved in the backup. If you bought a non-Samsung phone, you cannot restore the Samsung Backup, but as soon as you log into your Google account, you will be asked if you want to restore your apps and settings (you only get asked this once upon setup). If your old device is no longer functional and sitting on the Droid or Samsung logo, Smart Switch will not be able to access your device, as Smart Switch must be active on both devices. You may be able to perform a file transfer to a computer via USB, but this assumes that you originally turned auto blocker off on the original phone. If the phone is on, even if not fully booted up, the computer should see it as another drive. If it does not, you are out of luck for any personal data. If you used Samsung Notes, and had it set to sync with Samsung Cloud those, too, will be restored on a Samsung device when you log into your Samsung account and open Notes.

Samsung apps will not work on a non-Samsung phone, so you will lose anything you have in Samsung Pass (this is how Samsung locks you into the Samsung universe). Samsung Messages cannot be installed on a non-Samsung phone, you will have to use Google Messages. The good news, though, is all your messages will be in Google Messages, since both messaging apps are just shell readers with some features.

All your messages should be intact when you open your messaging app on your new phone, but if not, have you tried Smart Switch? Messages are stored in your Google sync/backup, so when you log into your Google account, they should show in whichever messaging app you are using. If you used Smart Switch to copy your data from one device to the other, all your settings, most of your apps (except the ones not allowed), messages and data will all be copied to the new device. You cannot use smart switch if your original device is not functional.
