I had to switch to Google text messages since Samsung is no longer going to support that. Now I don't have the different notification sound for texts that I did have. Looking for the answer, all the posts say to go to advanced setting and Enable Manage notification categories for each app. However when I go to Advanced settings I do not have that at all to be able to enable it. I have a Galaxy A32. Is there some other way to change to notification sounds for test messages?

Thanks

In 5.1 there was no such thing as the notification categories settings, they were just on.  In 6.0 the turned them off by default and then you had to enable the setting.  I have a backup device running 5.1 and when I go to the notification settings in Google Messages, it lists categories.  There you can set the default ringtone for incoming messages.  And you would set the ringtone for the chat the same way as described above.  Go into the chat, tap on the three dots, click on details, then go to notifications, tap on that and change the sound for that chat.  As I said the tone will stay attached to the chat as long as it exists.  It will look like the last photo.

Are you wanting to set up separate notification for each contact?

Open Google Messages
Open the chat

Tap on the contact's name at top left or
Tap the More icon (three vertical dots) on the left
Tap Details

This opens the contact's information tab

Scroll down
Tap Notifications
Make your changes
Back out to save changes

No thank you, I want all my text messages to have a different notification sound than my other notifications not individual contacts

And you can do that with Google Messages.  You must have notification categories turned on.  Then you have to go into the chat itself, tap the 3 dots, select details and then change the notification sound for that chat.  Do that with each chat you want a different sound for.  The sound attaches to that chat and that chat only, for as long as the chat exists.  It does not attach to the contact.  So, if you delete an entire chat with your mom, the next time your mom texts you it will have whatever the default sound for the incoming messages is, and you will have to set your mom's sound again.

To change the notification setting for the Google Messages app goto:

That only allows notifications, it doesn't allow me to select a notification sound.

The setting is notifications/advanced settings/manage notification settings for each app. Not advanced features. Just make sure you are in the right setting. Which OneUI are you on, this setting did not exist before OneUI 6.0. Then go to the notification settings in Google Messages and select the default sound for incoming messages. To give a chat its own notification sound, you have to go into the chat and tap on the chat settings, go to details and change the notification sound. Sounds aren't applied to individuals, they are assigned to the chat, and will stay with the chat unless you delete it.

Not sure it can be done without notification categories turned on, but you can try.

I figured that my phone was old, and that is why I didn't have the setting all were referring to. My phone has One UI version 5.1. Is there anything I can do to assign a different notification sound to my text messages with this phone?
