It's a hardware issue. One that Samsung refuses to acknowledge, and more importantly is unable (or unwilling) to fix.
They will tell you to drumroll your fingers, do a powerwash, send it for service... none of it will fix the problem for good.
I have the same issue since I bought mine, back in November. It was "serviced" twice, and the touchpad still locks, becomes unresponsive, etc.
