Hello, wanted to see if anyone here has experienced something similar with Samsungโ€™s USA online store and/or had advice on how to resolve this issue.

Bought a brand-new 4TB 870 EVO SSD straight from Samsung in June 2025. Physical label + original box both showed the correct 4TB serial (which Samsung themselves confirmed belongs to a 4TB 870 EVO in their database).

But every test (Linux/Windows/macOS, SATA + USB adapters, BIOS, diskpart, terminal, Samsung Magician) showed only 500GB capacity. Magician even pulled a completely different serial for a 500GB drive. Clear factory mismatch โ€” 500GB internals in a 4TB shell.

Submitted full RMA with invoice, photos, and detailed testing. After a week of emails + over an hour on the phone (multiple transfers), the senior rep said:
โ€œWe have no explanation for this anomalyโ€
โ€œThe service center will auto-reject it because of the serial mismatchโ€
โ€œBest option is probably a chargebackโ€

Emailed the CEOโ€™s office the same day. Waited a full week โ€” zero response.

Went to PayPal (paid through PayPal linked to my bank). Dispute denied instantly because it was outside their 180-day window.

Even with the current SSD price hike a 500GB SATA SSD is not worth $269. Samsung kept kicking this problem between the sales and warranty department. My invoice is for a 4TB SSD, my SSD is labeled as 4TB with a serial number they acknowledge as legitimate, and the box has the same serial number. It seems like a clear manufacturing defect that the warranty department claims their system canโ€™t accommodate and thus wonโ€™t honor their warranty.

Full Timeline:

  • June 2025: Purchased/received SSD. Initial Linux test showed 500GB; assumed it was a Linux partitioning issue (didnโ€™t think an SSD direct from Samsung would have something like this).
  • July 2025: Contacted support about capacity. Offered refund only, no guarantee to repurchase at same price (prices rising). I am an officer in the National Guard and some NG obligations prevented shipping/returns; was completely swamped with that and my day job. Figured resolving it within my 1-year warranty period would be fine.
  • Early Jan 2026: Had free time during the holidays. Holiday time allowed extensive tests on multiple systemsโ€”confirmed 500GB defect. Phone support advised Samsung Magician reporting + RMA email.
  • Jan 16, 2026: Submitted RMA with evidence. Rep noted mismatch; sent box photos immediately.
  • Jan 19, 2026: Follow-up ignored for 3 business days.
  • Jan 22, 2026: Denied for โ€œmodificationโ€ (dual serials); directed to sales. Called customer support led back to the same who admitted anomaly but suggested chargeback. Emailed CEO office. His subordinate claimed that Samsung Magician canโ€™t accurately report a serial number through a USB to SATA adapter.
  • Jan 29, 2026: No CEO response after week. Filed PayPal disputeโ€”auto-denied (180 days).

Again, I am still within my 1-year warranty and have contacted Samsung support multiple times about this to no avail. Is there any recourse here? Has anyone here resolved a similar issue with Samsung?

Usually I threaten with small claims court because if you sue them they have to send a representative to defend them which will almost always cost more than $200 an hour whether you win or lose doesn't really matter they will probably just send you a refund no questions asked

Thank you. I might have to attempt this at this point.
