I don't remember the display automatically turning on when the charger was removed. A couple of Android versions ago it did come on every time the charger was plugged in and removed. But in either Android 9 or Android 10 that feature was "fixed" so that the display remained off when plugging in or removing the charger. With the third beta of One 3.0 it still remains off when plugging in the charger but comes on when unplugging the charger. There's no need for the display to come on when removing the charger. It only brightens up an otherwise dark room or immediately starts using battery unnecessarily after being unplugged.
