I have my phone set to wake up from the lock screen when I say "Hey Google ".
The old behavior was the phone would wake up quickly realize it was a Google Home request and then go back to the lock screen.
The new behavior is, that the phone wakes up and displays a text box and mic. and displays the last five or six things I have asked Google Home to do. Then does not go back to a lock screen.
Also, when I do ask Google Assistant to do something the phone shows a text box and mic. and waits for input by keyboard or microphone. If I press the microphone the Assistant will answer or perform the task I ask it to do and continue to work with voice commands until you close the text box or you lock the screen. There maybe other scenarios I haven't run into yet.
Also when I any using my earbuds Google Assistant seems to work correctly.
This happened to me last week. Uninstalltal Google app update. Open the app. Adjust the voice settings (turning hey Google on, and other settings). Then update the app.
