Google messages update

My messages updated and now it shows that I have 15 unread messages when I only had 1. I restarted my phone and now it shows 3 when I only have one. This just started today.

I had an issue today where Google messages was not working and basically wasn't able to load chats. Had to uninstall all updates and it fixed it.

In settings also try clicking "mark all as read". This happened to me once a while back
