I've never been a big widget guy, since, for the most part, they looked hideous. The new widget interface (thanks to Google and One UI 4.0) is an order of magnitude improved over what came before.
I use my phone for productivity, period. Yes, there's the occasional video my kids send me, but I use the phone for work, organization, information consumption, and the like. I just loaded up one of my home pages with 4 widgets for "at a glance" purposes, and it's a winner. I have the entire day always in front of me (get a lot of windshield time in my truck moving from job to job), weather, emails, even Bud Live status.
