Buds 3 Pro only charging when case is open

I have two pairs of Buds 3 Pro, and both have the same problem. I don't use them very often, so they often sit for weeks inside the case. When I go to use them, the case is at 100% charge, but the buds have depleted batteries. As soon as I open the case, the buds immediately start charging again. 

This was never an issue with my original model Buds Pro. I've carried those around in my pocket for years and they're always fully charged and ready to go. But I can't trust these new Buds to actually be usable when I need them. 

Please don't tell me to check the contacts, the buds charge just fine once you open the case. The problem is they aren't staying charged when the case is closed.
