How to stop Buds from launching and playing app just because I touch them

I use my Buds to listen to iFit workouts.

Everything is great unless I need to push them back in a bit.

Then it launches NPR One and starts playing the news and pauses my workout.

Long touch to adjust volume works fine.

I can't find a way to disable the start/stop music feature.

Any ideas?
