photos not showing-I get a photo sketch w an ! (an exclamation point)

Are these photos also synced to Samsung Cloud or OneDrive?

They are on/in my phone memory. I think in the samsung gallery. 

Also of note, this fold is my first android (for a 2nd line) since it is much more innovative than the iphones.

Any/all constructive suggestions are appreciated.

Do you have them synced with a cloud service? That is a common source of the problem you're experiencing.
