Sun

Regarding the photo above:

Directly pointing a Samsung phone camera (or any other camera) at the sun for extended periods can cause permanent damage, resulting in dead pixels, sensor burn, or a persistent colored line in future photos. The intense infrared heat can damage internal components. Avoid prolonged exposure, use filters during eclipses, and limit shots to quick, low-light moments.

Risks of Shooting Directly into the Sun

โ€ข Sensor Damage: The intense concentrated light and heat can burn the image sensor, leading to permanent, small, dead spots or, over time, a permanent red/yellow streak in your photos.

โ€ข Heat Issues: The phone may overheat quickly, and the heat can potentially damage the lens aperture.

โ€ข Poor Image Quality: Direct sun can result in a "chalky" or washed-out image with overly processed HDR and reduced contrast.

Tips for Safe Sun Photography

โ€ข Avoid Long Exposure: Never keep the camera aimed directly at the sun for more than a quick, passing shot.

โ€ข Use Protection: Use a proper, dedicated solar filter over the lens, especially during a solar eclipse.

โ€ข Use the "Hand-Cover" Method: Use your hand or a lens hood to block direct sunlight from hitting the camera lens directly while still allowing you to take a photo of the surrounding scene.

โ€ข Use Indirect Light: Frame shots with the sun partially blocked by trees, clouds, or buildings.

โ€ข Avoid Zooming: Using a zoom lens can intensify the heat and light concentration on the sensor, increasing the damage risk.

By using the tips above, you will be able to capture vibrant, detailed, and artistic photos.

Amazing advice for those that don't know any better!

Funny that you mention Solar eclipse, I jerryrigged a filter out of welders glass last year for the eclipse . Terrible pictures, didn't have a tripod.at6bHZs4Ri.jpgIBjvtUlPYZ.jpg

Eclipse moment on my S25U and using a proper solar filter over the phone lens. You can get solar filter as cuttable sheet very cheaply.yO14SrrlXZ.jpg
