Asked to share IMEI #?

Yesterday I tried using the Samsung Care Service Pros for an issue I'm having with the Smart Call app. (Still having the same issue - that started after an update) What I am wanting to find out is this... is there a legitimate reason why they would ask me for my IMEI #? I honestly didn't know what that was and they told me how to find it on my phone... so I gave it to them and then did a search to find out what it was... (should have done that in reverse order) I now realize that that was like giving them access to the ability to "clone" my phone and to get my personal information. I'm feeling pretty stupid for doing it without asking questions first. Is there anything that I can do now to protect my phone? Is Samsung responsible in any way for these "Service Pros?" Can my info be used indiscriminantly by these people?

The Samsung Care Service Pros are employees for Samsung who also follow Privacy protection policies like the moderators and employees here in the Community. They likely pulled the IMEI from you in order to verify warranty information along with carrier lock information like MikeSapienza noted previously.

It would help them to determine what device you have and whether or not its unlocked or carrier locked.
However, on the other hand, they could have asked for the device model # and software version to achieve the same thing. It's a toss up. If you called them first, then its likely legit. If they called you and you hadn't set a callback up with them, then I would be concerned. If it's an official service center you went to, then you should have nothing to worry about.
