I basically let my phone idle the whole day and when I come to use it, it quickly drained to probably it's true percentage. Has Samsung been misreporting battery status?

I can definitely understand how frustrating this may be. I recommend trying this again while the phone is in safe mode. If the problem goes away then it is an app that causing this. Also, as best practice, please ensure that you have your device updated with the latest software. As a last resort, give your device a full factory reset.
