Galaxy S7 Edge Fingerprint scanner no longer working

JUMP TO SOLUTION

I LOVED the fingerprint scanner on my S7 Edge until about five days ago when it stopped recognizing my fingerprints. Does anyone else have this problem?

Things i've tried:
-- deleting and reentering my fingerprints
-- entering my the fingerprint i use most often twice
-- restarting the phone

I read somewhere that this seems to happen when the phone gets overheated, which is consistent with my situation, because my phone was with me on the beach last week (in a plastic bag) and it surely got warm (but it never complained about being overheated).

Any ideas? i LOVE using the scanner rather than a password.

Please follow the suggestions below for the problem you are having

We will start with restarting the device with a soft reset:
Press and hold the “Power” and “Volume Down” buttons for about 10 seconds until the device powers off. This allows the device to refresh itself without the loss of any data or person information.

If that doesn't work, go ahead and wipe the cache partition of the device.

To wipe the cache partition, follow these steps:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time:
    • Volume Up key
    • Home key
    • Power key.
  3. When the phone powers on and displays 'Power', release all keys and the Android icon should appear.
  4. When the Android System Recovery screen appears approx. 30 seconds later.
  5. Press the Volume down key to highlight 'wipe cache partition.'
  6. Press the Power key to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key to highlight 'yes' an press the Power key to select.
  8. When the wipe cache partition is complete, 'Reboot system now' is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Thanks!  i did the "soft reset" (which i'd never heard of before) and that didn't work by itself.  So i deleted and re-entered all the fingerprints (which i tried before) and this time it worked!  Thank you so much -- i LOVE the fingerprint reader on the S7 Edge.

This worked for me too. Also, after doing the soft reset I noticed I had my lock screen set to lock in 10 min. which I figured out also why my fingerprint wasn't working yet. I set my lock screen to immediately lock and my fingerprint worked.
