For the past few weeks, the screen has started getting increasingly glitchy and won't correctly initialize. If I hit the haptic screen button or the power button on the side, it does the same thing either way. Screen flashes but doesn't stay up, and the video gets squeezed up to the very top of the screen. Sometimes the screen will come up with a sickly yellow color where it'll eventually die, and the camera doesn't work at all.

Sometimes if I leave it alone and let whatever inside the phone reset itself, then it'll come up just fine after that. But other times it takes a lot longer. A LOT longer, several minutes, maybe even a half hour. Not really sure because when it gets into a bad mood I put the phone down and just try again later.

The weird thing I found is that if something automatically triggers the screen, I will then be able to get into the phone normally. Anything that automatically triggers the screen will work.
For example, if I get an incoming text and get the notification popup while the blue edge line lights up the screen border, I can hit Screen On right then and also have the screen power up normally.
Or, if I plug in the phone so that the swirling percent indicator pops up in the middle of the screen, it works there too.

And once it's on, it works fine for the rest of that session. It's like.. it has a faulty starter, but once you jump start it it works fine.

I made a short video this morning after charging my old phone to use as a camera.
(Sorry for the first-thing-in-the-morning voice)

Anyone have any ideas? The screen clearly works, it just doesn't reliably come up, which is becoming increasingly frequent and potentially extremely hazardous if I can't call for help at a time of need.

Do you experience these symptoms if you test your device in safe mode? If your phone is misbehaving, it's possible that a third-party app is causing the issue. To figure out what app is acting funny, you can use the Safe Mode feature. In Safe Mode, your phone won't run any third-party apps. This allows you to easily identity and remove the app that may be causing the problem. Give this link a try: https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS00062983/

Have you had an update to your device recently?

I don't believe I've installed anything recently that would correspond to this issue. I don't have any kind of screen management software installed. I can try safe mode later tonight.

The last software update was from the end of September when I finally received the Sept security patch. I checked for updates but it says I'm up to date.

Perfect, keep me posted if you still experience these symptoms while you are testing your device in safe mode.

Safe mode didn't help. It was actually a bit of a challenge to get the phone unlocked when booting, since the screen glitched out on the initial lock screen and plugging in the phone doesn't yet activate the screen.

I don't see my other post here (deleted? unposted?)  so to be clear with my reply on Friday, the screen glitch happened right out of the gate on the start of a reboot.  The Galaxy title screen was yellowed, and the PIN page was unreadable.  I was able to unlock the phone from muscle memory (after trying a few time) and the screen continued to malfunction all the way into Safe Mode.

So it's definitely not an issue with installed software.  Maybe a firmware issue?
