Only able to send texts through a created contact and received ones come as a separate conversation

When I send I text I can only send through a created contact but when I receive a text from someone it comes as a separate conversation without the 1 before the phone number. I'm really confused in what is going on and want to know how to fix it

I'm having the opposite issue, where I can receive texts just fine, but my texts are being received (by saved contacts) as new conversations with a reformatted version of my number. First two digits of my area code are now my "country code".
