When you open your Camera, the ratio settings will be the 3rd option from the top right of your camera, click on it and select full.

I've never used that before, how does that change anything when you save the pic, it looks nice but what is it actually doing? does it take to more space in the phone?

All it does is crop the picture automatically on the edges since the sensor itself is physically in 4:3 ratio. If you want the full size picture it's better to shoot in the native ratio and then crop in afterwards.
