How it is not valid? Each option has its pros and cons. Clearly some users need more space but for the price of a 500GB SD card, the cost savings is not greatly higher than the internal 512 upgrade. Especially with performance considerations.
On my S20 I got about 85MB/s on my Micro SD card read. On the S21 Ultra 512GB I get 1375 MB/s on A1bench. Not insignifigant.
I agree if you need to store lots of small files, space might be more important, for app performance or media creation, performance is likely more important.
