HEIC/HEIF auto conversion to JPG

So I recently purchased a Galaxy S21+ and turned on HEIC/HEIF as the default image format when taking pictures. I also enabled Auto Convert (to JPG) when sharing images.  The auto convert seems to work when sharing an image to msging or chat apps but when I share to the native Gmail app they are attached as HEIF files and not JPG images. To me that seems to be a bug. If I'm emailing pics to someone without HEIC/HEIF capabilities then there are too many extra steps to convert and attach JPG images to an email. I'm hoping this can be addressed as a fix in a future update.  Can anyone else confirm the same issue?

Gallery app edit->resize->save a copy allows you to save a jpg copy. Where is that auto-convert option for sharing btw?

If you open Gallery app, press the 3 lines button (lower right), choose settings, look a few down from the trash option.

I do realize I can convert them but that totally defeats the purpose of the auto-convert function. And with storage not being expandable now I not only have extra steps but also have extra copies of the same image taking up more space and then I need to delete them afterwards. Not very efficient when it doesn't work.
