Has anyone roamed on a true 5G network yet?

We have a unlocked S21 Ultra 5G phone and generally show a roam indicator on LTE. Our Galaxy S10+ would show 5G LTE.

What value should be showing as an indicator for a true 5G network?

Locked or unlocked does not really matter.  The SIM card that has your carrier's info can also carry the symbols for the network type.  AT&T was the first carrier to provide a 5G symbol, which was before 5G was released.  The newest version of this on AT&T is 5Ge.  Both their old 5G, and 5Ge symbols are actually LTE (4G).  What is likely happening here is that you are on a signal that ONLY provides 4G.  Go to:

Settings | Connections | Mobile Networks | Access Point Names

For 5G on AT&T, you would need to be either connected to the ATT Enhancedphone, or NXTGENPHONE APN.  If yours sais ATT Broadband, then you are on a 4G network.  In this case, click Add at the top, and then enter the fields as such:

Name : NXTGENPHONE

APN: NXTGENPHONE

Proxy: Not Set

Port: Not Set

Username: Not Set

Password: Not Set

Server: Not Set

MMSC: https://mmsc.mobile.att.net

Multimedia message proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net

Multimedia message port: 80

MCC: 310

MNC: 410

Authentication type: Not set

APN type: default,mms,supl,hipri,fota

APN Protocol: IPv4/IPv6

APN roaming protocol: IPv4/IPv6

Turn APN on/off: DISABLED/Greyed out

Bearer: Unspecified

Mobile virtual network operator type: GID

Mobile virtual network operator value: 53FF

After entering this in, click save, then make sure to fill in the radio selection button for the NXTGENPHONE

These settings are for AT&T only, if you are not on AT&T, lookup <Carrier Name> 5G APN Settings

That's probably the problem, I have 3, 2 only say LtE+ but the Carrier phones says 5g. I've talked to Samsung and my Carrier about this They have absolutely no idea But that just might be the case!!!

I assume the opposite. There hasn't been much lag using the S21 while displaying LTE.

The only difference would be if 5G networks are available (roaming).

5G is simply an upgraded antenna.

This reminds me more than a decade ago when ATT advertised 3G. I bought a 3G phone and 3G was not truly available for little over a year.

Exactly.

When on a provider's network locked phone, the carrier can show their network's broadcast title (call sign). With a unlocked phone, it roams on multiple networks when the signal is present.

We believe LTE is the generic symbol while roaming on an unlocked 5G phone :mobile_phone:
