Unique Notification sound for google text messages

We've been told to switch to Google messaging, which I have done, but have an issue: I want to get a unique notification sound for a new text message. Can anyone tell me how to set that up? My phone is ATT-based. None of the searches I've done online give me an answer that works.

Next time you get a notification, press and hold to go into notification settings. Change the sound

     If you have UI6.1

     First Turn This On:
⁃   Settings  ≻
⁃   Notifications  ≻
⁃   Advanced Settings  ≻
⁃   Turn "Manage Notification
     Categories for Each App" On .

     Then:

⁃   Open Google Messages  ≻
⁃   Click on Your Pic / Avatar  ≻
⁃   Messages Settings  ≻
⁃   Notifications  ≻
⁃   Notification  Categories  ≻
⁃   Click on "Incoming Messages"  ≻
      ( not the switch on/off )
⁃   Sound  ≻
⁃   Choose a Notification Sound.
