So about month ago I had to replace my phone with the same identical phone due to a cracked camera. That was fine. Now my problem is that when I transferred my info to the new phone somehow my contact info as it pertains to messaging is sometimes gambled. I mean I receive a text from Detra but only it's with Jason's icon and number. I then reply but detra never receives it Jason does. The info in the contacts is correct but some how it gets sorted incorrectly when texting. Is there a way to correct this and make it right? This is just one example there are other instances as well. Please help.

Which messaging app are you using?  Whichever it is, you should clear the cache and data.  Clearing the data will not delete any messages.  I don't believe it's the contacts that are scrambled, it's the messaging app.  If you call Debra or Jason, do they get their respective calls?

I'm using Google messages. I've cleared the cache but was afraid to clear the data. Is there a way to send it to the cloud first and back it up?

Clearing the data will not delete messages.  It only resets the app settings, so any customizations, such as separate notification sounds for different chats, and certain outdated settings (sometimes updates keep old settings that have been eliminated in new versions of the app) will need to be reconfigured.  You can back up the messages you do have by using Smart Switch and backing them up either to the cloud or external device.  You can also download SMS Backup & Restore from the play store and back them up.  One can never have too many backups.
