I'm not able to select my contacts by selecting the alphabet, I have to scroll to that alphabet or type the name.

The notification alerts being grouped into a hidden bar is bizarre.

I prefer the swipe method to review my apps over the list method.

Why can't a user  have the option with the suggested updates, as long as it not hardware based?

To put the panels back together.
Go to the Quick panel by swiping down from the top right.

Click on the pencil icon, panel settings, together.

Unless you specifically turned it off, your contacts should have been syncing with Google. Go to contacts.google.com and check, or open the contacts app, manage contacts and see where your contacts are located, then point the contacts app to that location as your default. I would give more explicit instructions, but I heard the app changed slightly with the update and I do not have the update yet.

When selecting contacts a scroll bar will appear, put your thumb or finger on it and the alphabet will automatically appear

I know that and that's not the issue. When you select an alphabet, it will not go to that selection of choice.

In the contacts app? I don't get the option to choose contacts by letter. Just the scroll bar with letter appearing next to it as you scroll.

The contacts app also has a search, so if you have a lot of contacts and don't want to scroll, just hit the search and tap the first couple of letters of the name. It will come up with a list of contacts who have that sequence and you can select the one you want.
