How to prevent firmware update (software update) and allow only manual update on phone

With the One UI 8.5 update expected "soon", what is the definitive way to prevent the phone from downloading the update and allow only a manual update when the user wants it? I don't want the phone to update to One UI 8.5 until the time I specifically want to install the update.

I would like to avoid the Secure Folder fiasco caused by the One UI 8 update which took months to fix.

Go to settings > software update and turn off auto-download. The system should notify you when an update is available for download.

I had turned off auto-download just before the One UI 8.0 update but it may have been done too late since the update was there the next morning. I had also turned of the toggle for "Auto update system" in the Developer options.

Hope the One UI 8.0 update does not happen automatically this time.🤞 I would like to wait a couple of weeks to see if there are any major issues before updating.

You're welcome! The way this update is being slow-rolled, I don't think you'll have to worry about many issues. Especially since the AI-heavy stuff won't be coming to your device.

I think you can only postpone the installation 3 times, iirc. So be judicious about when you download it.

1: Disable Auto Download over Wi-Fi

1. Go to Settings
2. Tap Software update
3. Turn OFF:
   • Auto download over Wi-Fi
   • (If available) Auto install overnight

This ensures updates won’t download or install automatically.

2: Turn Off Automatic System Updates (Developer Options)

1. Go to Settings → About phone → Software information
2. Tap Build number 7 times (to enable Developer Options)
3. Go back → Developer options
4. Turn OFF:
   • Auto update system

This prevents the phone from installing updates without your permission.

Thanks @purel . I have implemented these based on @Mujibar 's and my comments above and am keeping my fingers crossed. Hopefully, the One UI 8.5 update will not be as disruptive as the One UI 8.0 update. I will manually update after checking the feedback on this site.
