Previously when I would open a group text message there was a menu option to change notification sound. It is no longer there (it still exists in the menu for individual text messages). I can no longer figure out how to change the notification sound for a group message.

I can certainly understand your confusion with changing this setting. Thanks for bringing this matter to our attention. If I'm not mistaken, you can change the notification of the group chat by going to Contacts, tapping (three horizontal lines) Show navigation menu > Groups. There you should be able to edit the group and change the sound the group makes when you receive a notification. Let us know if this helps.
No this doesn't answer it. In messages, before recent update, I have a group chat with my coworkers. I had it where anyone I got a notification from that specific chat I could get a specific sound, it works on individual chats. The group chat rings multiple times a day and by hearing their specific sound I know I don't need to check right away. So by having to change each individuals tone to the same sound I'm not solving the problem I'm trying to. Go back to being able to give convo threads their own sounds
