Prior to the update, I had no security on my phone.  I simply swiped to open it; no pin, no facial recognition, no fingerprint.  I have NOTHING on my phone I care about.   I don't want to have to do an 8-digit pin every time I pick it up.  But when I try to set my security to swipe ONLY, it says that action is not allowed.  Is this correct?  Do I have to have some form of security now?  Thanks

You may need to set a PIN at first, but I believe you can go back in and change it to swipe.

I did set up a PIN, since it insisted on some form of security, but now that it's set up, I go to Lock Screen, tap Screen lock and biometrics, and it asks for the pin, and then only Pin and Password are highlighted as options.  Pattern, Swipe, and None are grayed out and if I tap them, it says action not allowed.

I'm able to do it on my devices. Did you clear device cache after the update?

1) Turn off your device.

2) Press and hold the Volume Up button and the Side/Power button until you feel a vibration and the Samsung logo appears. Let go of the buttons.

3) You will now be in Android recovery. Use the Volume buttons to highlight "Wipe cache partition."

4) Press the Side/Power button to execute.

5) Use the Volume buttons to highlight "Yes."

6) Press the Side/Power button to execute.

7) "Reboot system now" will already be highlighted. Press the Side/Power button to execute.

Just a side note here.  You say you have nothing on your phone you care about, but you *are* signed into your Google and Samsung account.  Having no security on your phone at all gives bad actors access to those accounts where they can just take those accounts over.  If you have passwords stored in Google or Samsung pass, they would have access to those.  Do you really want someone who steals or finds your phone to have access to all your contacts?

You don't need an 8 digit pin. Four is sufficient.  You do not have to enter it every time you pick up your phone if you enable extend unlock.  If you set a fingerprint as well as a PIN, you can use your fingerprint to unlock, although after 72 hours or a restart, you will have to enter the pin.

However, clearing the phone's cache partition should re-enable the greyed out options so that you can go protectionless.

Unfortunately clearing the cache partition didn't do anything.  And when it forced me to set up a pin, after the update, it specifically said it had to be 8 digits, cuz I tried 4 and it wouldn't accept it.  Guess it's time to call Samsung.  thanks for the suggestions.
