Expert Raw - double-press of side button requires unlock

Assigned Expert Raw to double-press of the side button, but when using the gesture while the phone is locked, it prompts for unlocking the phone before pictures can be taken.

However, if the Expert Raw app is assigned to one of the two quick launch shortcuts, it opens without unlocking from there.

It would be nice if this behavior worked with the double-press gesture, just like the regular camera app.

You normally have to unlock your phone to perform any action from the lock screen.  It's a security measure to protect you and your information.  It also prevents some rando from using your camera (assuming the icon is on the lock screen) to take inappropriate photos and fill your phone with contraband.

That's not a valid argument.

Double-press with locked phone works with the regular camera app. And opening Expert Raw from quick launch shortcut from the lockscreen also works. No unlock needed in these cases.

I'm not arguing I'm stating facts. I don't make the phones or program the phones I just know how they work; obviously you do not. There are avenues for sending your feedback if you are dissatisfied. And the button action works because you programmed it to.

That's a bold claim. If it's truly a fact, kindly provide your sources, because what you're claiming simply doesn't hold up logically.

The double-press gesture launches the default camera app without requiring unlock. I did not program this behavior; it's the system default.

If this were genuinely a security measure, it would apply consistently, including to the default camera app. It doesn't. Therefore, it's not a security measure. It’s an inconsistency.

Moreover, the app opens without requiring unlock when accessed via a different method (quick launch shortcut, ON the lockscreen). This clearly shows it was simply overlooked. It should behave the same way as the default app.

And yes, I did already send my feedback to Samsung in the Members app.

P.S.: You are in fact arguing.

Yes, one can use the camera while the phone is locked. Swiping up on the camera icon or double tapping the power button will open the camera. But one can only take snaps and look at the preview, that is all that can be done. Personally I think this is an unfortunate allowance, but I get in some cases why it is allowed.

Anyway, that camera icon can be replaced. When editing the lock screen apps, just touch the camera icon and a quick panel will come up from the bottom where actual quick panel features can be used or those from the app drawer. Just choose one then click done and the camera is replaced on the lock screen. When trying to use the other app, it will be open, but only show when the screen is unlocked.

Edit: the double tap feature will work still on camera unless reassigned. I have dbl press disabled anyway using long press to activate assistant.

Thanks for your comment, but I'm not sure you understood my point.

I know the camera icon can be replaced, that's what I'm saying. Expert Raw works without unlocking from the quick launch shortcut, but not with the double press gesture.

What I want to achieve is replace the default camera app with Expert Raw on the double press and have it open without unlocking the phone (like the regular camera app).

As a sidenote, I use double tap to open camera when I want to take a quick picture, so there is no need (and also no way) to access picture histroy, hence it's not a security concern.

It cannot be done. There are only a select small list of apps that will work under that function. In the end though, why would it matter if you can get the ER to function from icon instead of the double press, which can still be used to access the default camera app?

Double tapping or even using a single tap enables the lock screen to become visible anyway.

The point is that it should be possible. Samsung can add an exception for this app just like they did with the default camera app.

Talk to Samsung, because what one says "should be" is political at that point. If you go into advanced features and open the side button, you will see that short list. Maybe put in the feedback section under support when opening the Members app.

In any event, you will engage the lock screen regardless of using the side button as an actuator for an app. At that point, the ER app then is seen at the bottom (if replacing the default camera app) ready for use. I am only saying that is how it can work, not that it should be able to work the other way too.
