Update: I went to an ATT store and found a employee who said "Sure" to my request for a SIM for a short time. The next day I was told an update for my phone was ready. In installed successfully, and my phone switched from AT&T to T-Mobile now. My phone then took about 6 more updates and is now up to date with Oreo and all patches through this month.
And as an added note. Oreo works just fine, I see no battery issues, and it has not crashed once. On the flip side, i see very little difference in this update from 7.0 so not sure what is so great here.
I see what the problem is, both of you are actually quite a few updates behind. At that point it actually stops doing updates over the air because it could actually cause problems to your device. I would suggest trying to use Smart Switch! When downloaded onto your computer you can use the program to update the device as long as that update was pushed out to your device at one point. If even Smart Switch considers you too far back you'll need to take the device into one of your carrier's stores to have them push the updates.
