I keep my S8 in a kangaroo pocket on the chest of my coveralls [think 'farmer denim coveralls'] It's never pressed hard against my body.
Samsung Galaxy S8 + Set for left-hand user [me!] + Latest update [Android Pie Version G950U1UEU5DSC1 / G950U1OYM5DSC1] + NO SCREEN PROTECTOR OF ANY TYPE!
When I have this phone ON, I keep this on Home Screen with NO icons (no weather, no time, no widgets, no Google, NOTHING)
I set SETTINGS > Display > Edge Panels OFF
I set SETTINGS > Display > Quick-open notification OFF
I set SETTINGS > Display > Rotate to landscape OFF
I set SETTINGS > Display > Hard press Home button = 5 of 5
I set SETTINGS > Display > Unlock with Home button - ON
I set SETTINGS > Display > Navigation = buttons (not gestures)
Despite me trying to be careful, I eventually resorted to turning this phone OFF most of every day. Not only do I miss incoming phone calls, but it is STILL too sensitive when I turn it ON. When I select an app longer than 1 screen, it scrolls to the extreme top or bottom.
What is the point of having a phone, than I can't leave it ON? Then when I do turn it ON, it's TOO SENSITIVE. Is there an answer on this forum?

Thank you ALL for your suggestions ~ you fixed my problem!
After trying both 'Swipe To Unlock' and 'Lift To Wake' I went with 'Swipe To Unlock' 'Lift To Wake' was manly for horizontal pick-ups, and my problems with Galaxy S8 were vertical (in my kangaroo pocket). I mowed my lawn one day, then took a day-long ride on my motorcycle the next. I didn't get any unexpected openings!
When I initially set 'Swipe To Unlock' Galaxy also turned ON 2 small icons at the bottom-corners on the "new" Home Screen ~ a small phone and small camera icons. Arghhh ~ I fussed around and found Settings > Lock Screen > App Shortcuts > Left shortcut and Right Shortcut. I turned both of them OFF. I DIDN’T want more "shortcuts" since I already had problems opening unexpected apps in my pocket.
