Galaxy Watch GPS inacurrate

JUMP TO SOLUTION

I use the watch (42mm) for tracking my runs (I leave the phone at home).  So far it's useless - on a five mile run, it will report I've only travelled 3.6 to 4.0 miles.  I just ran 3 miles, and it reported 2.85.  (I run with a partner on various known routes, it's definitely the galaxy watch that's off.)  On the longer runs, the timer keeps ticking, but no gps or steps are counted for long segments of the run (so far up to .6 miles at a time).  I can stop in an open area during these times, pause the workout, but nothing seems to get it to 'wake up' and log the data.  The entire time, the gps icon is solid and says it's locked.

I am on my second watch - tech support asked me to exchange the first for the same issue. I'm not about to send the watch in for diagnosis - I'll be out of my return period with the retailer when I get it back.  And this seems like a software issue to me. Setting, permissions, restarting the watch have all been tried with tech support on multiple occassions. Anyone else having these problems?  Any info on a potential fix?

Re: Galaxy Watch GPS inacurrate

JUMP TO SOLUTION

I have s3 and Galaxy watch and use them for running. I have no real problems, but do the following:

* untether watch from phone

* use GPS-only setting on watch (mobile and Wifi networks can really throw measurements)

* ensure GPS is already locked (tracking) before starting run (establishing lock in plenty of time starting in area of good reception if possible)

* use a specialist running app such as Gear Tracker, preferably taking measurements at 1 second intervals

* if uploading to apps like Strava, select "race" as avoids misinterpreting data across API (you will otherwise have a shorter run time and higher pace) Alternatively export as TCX and load directly to Strava (similarly gpx upload via samsung health)

Hope this helps as can imagine the frustration if not working. I use Gear Tracker as the developer is really active and helpful (see fb page). I can see that samsung health is gradually getting better, but for now would use a specialist running app every time.

Cheers, Tim

JUMP TO SOLUTION

It's clearly a software issue.

3 days i have the watch (the 46mm bluetooth).

1st day : always on display issue. Needed to reboot to zero and lose my seetings to fix the issue.

2nd day : step count stuck at 18 steps (the ones i made the night).Needed to reboot to zero and lose my seetings to fix the issue.

3rd day : GPS issue. For a walk of 1 hour, no GPS between minute 10 and 15.

I made 7 worjouts for walking since the beginning ang got no GPS issue. Software issue.

It must be fixed quickly.

JUMP TO SOLUTION

Yes, I am!

I've only had the watch 5 days. I've been on 3 x 5 kilometer runs and each run the tracking has stopped at about 3.68k even though the green GPS signal is locked on. I use the 'zombies run' app on my phone and this is tracking correctly.

On the samsung health app, I can see on the map 1k, 2k, and then the 3rd K is realllly long. So the watch is still tracking my distance, it just stops counting.

I've tried all the 'tips and tricks' (relating to the gear S3 and none worked) but that isn't the point, you shouldn't have to mess around with disconnecting bluetooth etc It should just work.

I think I'm going to exchange it at a store for a new one but I have a feeling it will be the same.

I am also having exactly the same problems with GPS tracking my runs.

I've ran 2 routes I know well, a 5k and a 10k.  The 5k stopped recording GPS positions at 3.68k then started again a few hundred metres before I finished.  On the 10k route it stopped recording at 7k and never recovered.

I synced both runs to Strava which confirmed when the GPS had stopped recording but the overall time of both runs were correct.

I'm going to return to using my Garmin for running (which is a big shame), until there's a software update, then give it another try.

Similar problem.

Using endomondo my 5km run it stopped logging at 2.08km

Just complete a 10km run and used Samsung health, it stopped logging at 3.78km. Still logs the time but it seems to completely loose the plot regarding the gps. GPS was green the entire time.

Pretty poor considering the cost of the watch. I was going to sell my gear s3 but think I will be going back to it for the moment.

Cheers

Re: Galaxy Watch GPS inacurrate

I think you're missing the point SamsungLarry.

Firstly your link forwards to a post about mobile phones. While I appreciate that connectable devices may perform  better when they are linked to a phone, the galaxy watch does not. Also you can virtually do nothing on a mobile phone if location services are turned off.

Secondly, we as consumers are supposed to be able to take this watch out for a run without our phones for backup, otherwise what is the point of having GPS and a music player on the watch??

I have plotted the GPX data on a map and there are sporadic gps markers but the watch doesn't have the sense to measure the distance between the markers and add them to your distance. It's as though the GPS sensor goes to sleep and wakes up occasionally to check the satellite, all the time telling the user it is still connected.

You can view my mapping here https://1drv.ms/u/s!Amie5fCKMKrb3BPXIxgxtDULSlL5

For anyone interested, export your GPX data from your run on Samsung health and import it to https://www.maplorer.com/view_gpx.php

You'll need to create an account but it is free. If your markers don't appear, click "Hide markers" then "Show markers"

The subject is about the Galaxy watch GPS issues. Not the phone. My watch GPS doesn't work worth a. I took the first one back and the second one is doing the same thing.

Same here. I see distance difference between watch vs phone, i didn't know who is right. But today watch stopped recording km at 2.7...
At least had my phone recording workout to know when to finish my run at 5 km.
I will give it back and take my money to use it for a garmin. At least they work! Samsung watch looks great, but thats all...

Same thing happened to me, GPS stopped recording after 3.07 km on a 5 km run, might have to return the watch as this is a huge miss if it won't work properly without a phone.
