Question on watch face icon

Why does the lock-like icon always appear at the 12:00 point on what-seems-like every watch face... even when watch is unlocked? 

What does it mean, and can you remove it? If I tap one it, nothing happens!? Thanks!

It means that your watch is not connected to your phone via Bluetooth.
